Drop Height and Volume Control the Mobility of Long-Runout Landslides on the Earth and Mars

چکیده
Long-runout landslides are landslides with volumes of 10 m or more, which move much farther from their source than expected. The observation that Martian landslides are generally less mobile than terrestrial landslides offers important evidence regarding the mechanism responsible for the high mobility of long-runout landslides. Here we simulate landslides as granular flow using a soft-particle discrete element model. We show that while surface gravity plays a negligible role, observed differences in fall height naturally reproduce the observed differences in mobility of Martian and terrestrial landslides. We also demonstrate that landslides on Iapetus may fit this trend. Our simulations do not include any fluid and indicate that a mechanism similar to acoustic fluidization can explain the high mobility of long-runout landslides. This implies that long-runout landslides on Mars should not be considered as evidence for ice, saturated clays, or liquid water.

New insights on the runout of large landslides in the Valles-Marineris canyons, Mars
[i] Analogy with lab-scale dry granular flow experiments demonstrates that runouts and deposits heights of VallesMarineris (VM) landslides can be scaled on a curve varying primarily with the initial aspect ratio of the mobilized rock mass (before slope failure). This results suggests both that any interstitial fluid played a negligible part in the VM landslides dynamics and that mobility is not...

[1] Recent experiments on dry granular flows over horizontal plane bare some similarities with large Martian landslides observed in Valles Marineris (VM). However, Martian normalized runout are twice as large as those that observed in dry granular flow experiments. Numerical simulations on theoretical 2D and real 3D topographies reconstructed from remote sensing data show that slope effects sig...

Landslides take part in weathering and transport processes on Earth as well as on Mars. Prediction of their dynamics remains difficult in spite of many experimental and numerical studies. Numerous numerical works have been carried out on real landslides cases using DTM (Digital Topographic Model) so as to improve our understanding of their development by comparing results with field observation...
